Piercing / Navel piercing

Navel piercing

Belly button piercing is a popular form of body art, but it is characterized by a longer healing time, usually between 6 and 9 months, sometimes longer. Unlike the quick healing of an earlobe piercing, a navel piercing requires patience and careful care throughout the healing process. This is due to the avascular nature of the abdomen (lack of blood supply), which slows healing, as well as the stress caused by normal body movement and clothing friction. Although navel piercings were originally popular mainly among teenage girls, today people of all ages and genders get them. According to surveys, navel piercing is performed by almost all piercers (98.7 percent).

Types of navel piercing

A traditional vertical piercing is placed in the center over the fold of tissue above the navel. If the skin in the area is stiff, the procedure can be more difficult and the piercing more prone to migration and rejection. It is important for the piercer to carefully assess the size and configuration of your navel, sitting, standing and lying down, as the shape and dimensions can change dramatically depending on body position. If your belly button flattens and closes when sitting, this should be taken into account when determining the placement and size of your jewelry. The key to a successful piercing is that the jewelry is positioned to fit your body in all normal positions and postures.

Suitable jewelry for navel piercing

  • Curved barbells are recommended for initial navel piercings, which adapt better to body movements and are less likely to injure than rings.

  • The minimum thickness of jewelry should be 14 gauge, and sometimes 12 gauge is used.

  • The length of the barbell depends on the size and shape of the navel, with the most common length being between ⅜ to 9/16 inches.

  • To ensure a comfortable and safe healing, it is important that the piercer carefully selects a piece of jewelry adapted to your anatomy.

  • Choosing the right jewelry can greatly affect the success of healing and overall satisfaction with the piercing.

Navel piercing healing and care

The process of complete healing of a navel piercing usually takes from 5 to 9 months, sometimes even longer. Complete healing means that the piercing canal is completely covered with new skin. The piercing almost always overflows, so we first give a longer piece of jewelry, which we exchange for a shorter one in about 1-2 months. Otherwise, there is a risk of frequent tripping over the jewelry and subsequent traumatization. Sometimes it needs to be replaced several times during healing, so if you feel that the jewelry is becoming too long and is in the way, you can ask for it to be shortened. When exchanging jewelry for a shorter one, the price of the jewelry is paid according to the current price list, the service is free if it is an initial healing process.
