Taurus in tattooing: what each symbol means

The strongest motif is the bull's head – calm, force and no interest in backing down. It takes realistic treatment as well as a blunt blackwork shorthand. The horns on their own are the quieter version of the same thing: two strokes anyone can read.

The ruling planet of Taurus is Venus, which is why flowers and plant motifs – roses, peonies, leaves – suit this sign better than you would expect. For something less literal there is the constellation, or the glyph of the sign: a circle with an arc on top.

Styles that suit Taurus

Blackwork and dotwork are the most rewarding for a bull's head – solid black holds the shape for years. Realism needs more room and, above all, good reference, or the head collapses into grey.

Fine line belongs to the floral motifs and to the glyph; it tends to be the choice for a first tattoo. Ornamental work lets you join the horns with geometry or a mandala – a version that sits well on the shoulder.

Where to place it

A bull's head wants a surface: chest, shoulder blade, shoulder or thigh. The horns alone can be scaled down onto the forearm or behind the ear. Floral motifs look best along the line of the arm or on the ribs, where they can follow the shape of the body.
