Vegvisir tattoo: meaning and symbolism

The vegvísir, often called the "Viking compass", is one of the best-known Norse symbols of all. Its name translates from Icelandic as "wayfinder" or "signpost", and it is built from a circular sign with eight arms and runic staves radiating from the centre.

According to Norse and Icelandic magical tradition the sign was meant to guide and protect its bearer so they would not lose direction even in the worst weather and the hardest times – physically and spiritually alike. Vikings are said to have drawn it on their ships before setting out. That force of guidance and protection is what makes the vegvísir a motif everyone fills with their own story.

Modern meaning and personal reading

Today people choose the vegvísir as a symbol of finding and holding their own path – support and direction in uncertain periods, when a person is looking for the way on. It also works as a protective sign for the journey of life and as a reminder that there is a way out even of a storm.

For many it is also an expression of connection to Norse heritage and tradition. It is often combined with other Viking elements – the valknut, a raven, the tree Yggdrasil or a runic ring – which fill out the meaning further.

Styles and design variations

Our gallery is dominated by clean blackwork in black line – the circular eight-armed sign, often set into a ring of runes. You will find it in a fine minimalist treatment and as part of worked Norse compositions with a valknut, a raven, a bear, Odin, Yggdrasil or wings.

Colour appears only occasionally – usually as a turquoise accent that lifts the sign. We tattoo the vegvísir most often on the forearm and arm; the chest, back, thigh and shoulder are popular too. It works for anyone – from a small sign to a full sleeve.

Our artists like to experiment, and they will build you something that still makes sense to you years from now.
