Tiger tattoo: meaning and symbolism

The tiger is among the strongest and most commanding motifs of all. As the king of the big cats it is a symbol of strength, power and dominance, but also of courage and fearlessness. Above all, though, cultures across the world have read it as a protector – a guardian spirit that shields its bearer from evil spirits, demons, illness and misfortune.

With that come passion, raw energy and wild instinct, along with the independence and pride of a solitary hunter. In Chinese tradition the tiger balances the dragon in the spirit of yin and yang – the tiger crouches low and commands the wind, while the dragon rises to the sky. That layering is what makes the tiger a motif everyone fills with their own story.

Modern meaning and personal reading

Today people most often choose the tiger as a symbol of inner strength, courage and self-belief, of willpower and triumph over difficulty. It also works as a protective talisman meant to watch over the wearer and those close to them. For others it expresses passion, wildness and a free spirit.

As a motif for women the tiger emphasises the capacity to defend a family, along with animal beauty and sensuality. In Japanese irezumi the tiger guards against evil and misfortune and expresses strength and indomitability. The style and the additions are what turn a common motif into something only yours.

Styles and design variations

Our gallery has two clear directions. The first is detailed realistic blackwork – a tiger head with a piercing gaze or a predatory snarl. The second is Japanese irezumi, where the tiger appears in a dynamic pose, often with cherry blossom, waves or bamboo, or locked in combat with a dragon; the white tiger appears too.

Colour comes into play mainly in traditional and old-school treatments – saturated orange, black and red tones, often with a rose. We tattoo tigers most often on the arm, shoulder, chest and back; the forearm, ribs, thigh and neck are popular too. The motif is more often requested by men, but it suits anyone and reads best at medium to large size.
