Dragon tattoo: meaning and symbolism

The dragon is not one motif but two very different ones. The Asian dragon – long serpentine body, whiskers, small legs – is a benevolent creature: it carries wisdom, luck, protection and power over water. In Chinese tradition the number of claws marked rank, and five belonged to the emperor's dragon.

The European dragon is the opponent: winged, fire-breathing, guarding a hoard, something a hero has to defeat. In tattooing it therefore stands for a force that has to be mastered, while the Asian one stands for a force that protects. The Celtic dragon is woven into knotwork and ties to the land and to natural forces.

Modern meaning and personal reading

Most people today choose a dragon as a symbol of inner strength and resilience – something that lives in you and is better kept on your side. A common reading runs through a hard chapter that has been survived: the dragon as what was defeated, or what was tamed.

A large group of these are motifs from film, books and series. There is nothing wrong with that – it is just worth deciding in advance whether the design should be a recognisable quotation or a creature of your own inspired by it.

Styles and design variations

The strongest fit is Japanese style – the body led along an arm, the back or a leg, with waves, clouds and peonies. It is made for a large surface and several sessions; a small Asian dragon usually loses what makes it good. Black and grey realism and blackwork belong more to the European type, where it is about a dramatic silhouette and scales.

Smaller work does exist: a single-line dragon, geometric or ornamental treatments, Celtic interlace. Colour is used generously in Asian styles – red, orange and blue for flames and water; European dragons we usually keep in black. We tattoo dragons most often on the arm, forearm, back, thigh and calf.
